Snow Hill History

Worcester County was formed from Somerset County in 1742, and Snow Hill became the county seat. There were about 1000 lots laid out when the town was platted in 1793. A resolution was adopted in June 1775, supporting the Massachusetts colonists during the American Revolutionary War. During the War Between the States, both Northern and Southern sympathies were evident. While the War of 1812 was going on, local records were hidden.

The town's economy was driven by trade. Snow Hill continued to serve the Western Shore as an active port as steamboats replaced schooners. Lumber companies, churches, schools, hotels, and boarding houses dominated the waterfront. As a result of the river's traffic, general merchandise stores, liveries, coopers, smiths, and wagon makers all made their livelihoods. Mercers, bankers, farmers, and sea captains displayed their wealth and fine homes in Snow Hill, a town of gracious living. As a result of its proximity to the river and its local trade, Snow Hill became an attractive place for artisans. Access to the river allowed them to import and export goods and materials.

During a disastrous fire in 1893, Snow Hill's original downtown area and the early records of the town and county were destroyed. The fire destroyed the downtown business district. However, many historic homes and public buildings remained, including some pre-Revolutionary War structures still carefully preserved by Snow Hill residents.
