Ocean City, Maryland History

Ocean City, Maryland's sun and surf have attracted visitors since Algonquian tribes first came here to fish and sun themselves.
The first Europeans to arrive in North America were Giovanni da Verrazano and his crew in 1524. British colonists settled in this area in the 17th century.

A sleepy fishing village, Ocean City, was a barrier island until 1875, when the Atlantic Hotel opened to tourists. By the following year, the railroad had bridged Sinepuxent Bay, and a resort had been born.

An ancestor of today's Coast Guard, the U.S. Life-Saving Service, established a station here in 1878. In stormy seas, they rescue shipwreck victims. Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum, built in 1891, commemorates the brave men who worked at the second station.

Ocean City, Maryland's first wooden boardwalk, was built in 1900. Shortly after that, Trimper's Amusements opened. Unlike today, the path was open only for some years. In the winter, the boards were taken up and stored until spring.
It is equally fascinating to learn about the history of Ocean City's Inlet. In August 1933, a powerful storm opened a new channel from the bay to the ocean. As a result of its new harbor, Ocean City became the White Marlin Capital of the World, one of the most popular sports fishing destinations on the east coast.

It did not take long for Ocean City, Maryland, to become a favorite resort for eastern seaboard visitors. Ocean City vacations were accelerated by railroads in the 19th century, while bridges did the same in the 20th century. Upon opening in 1952, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge allowed quick, direct access between Baltimore and Washington. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel opened in 1964, allowing direct access to Virginia's Tidewater region.

Ocean City stretches along 10 miles of gorgeous beach from the Inlet to the Delaware state line. There are nearly 3 miles of food, games, and shopping on Ocean Cities' classic wooden boardwalk. Roland E. Powell Convention Center is a top-rated venue for all types of meetings. Moreover, Ocean City offers more than 10,000 hotel rooms and 21,000 condominiums to suit every taste and need.
